Other Points of Interest
These are a few points I
have picked up in reading. These ideas are current,but I don't know how rigorously
they have been tested. Again, I invite your comments.
- Contamination of ground water by latrines in densely populated areas may be
less a problem then previously thought. Where it is a problem, improving the
protection of the water supply (pipe lines and well aprons, for example) may be
more cost effective than the adoption of improved waste handling(such as sewer
systems and septic tanks).
- In some areas, where latrine adoption is unlikely, it may be worth
considering, as an alternative, working with communities to improve their
designation of field defecation plots.
A burning question
I would like to know how effective simple pit latrines are in areas with
frequent flooding and high water tables. Any comments, information or references
you might send would be greatly appreciated.
